Surviving Your First Hours in Elden Ring

Elden Ring is FromSoftware's most accessible Soulslike game — but "accessible" is relative. The Lands Between will still punish you early and often. These tips aren't here to hold your hand; they're here to make sure you're making informed decisions so every death teaches you something.

10 Essential Beginner Tips

1. You Don't Have to Fight Every Enemy

Elden Ring rewards exploration, not mandatory combat. If an enemy is destroying you, ride past on Torrent (your horse) and come back later when you're stronger. The open world exists specifically to let you find your own path forward.

2. Level Vigor Early — It's Not Optional

Vigor determines your HP. Many new players neglect it to boost their offensive stats, then wonder why every hit kills them. Aim for at least 25–30 Vigor before progressing to the first major dungeon. No exceptions.

3. Visit the Roundtable Hold ASAP

Once you find your first Site of Grace in Limgrave, you'll gain access to the Roundtable Hold — a hub area with merchants, upgraders, and NPCs who give you quests. Go here early and talk to everyone.

4. Upgrade Your Weapon Before Anything Else

Weapon upgrades matter far more than character levels in the early game. Collect Smithing Stones (found in mines and caves) and upgrade your starting weapon at a blacksmith. A +4 or +5 weapon will carry you through the first two bosses easily.

5. Torrent Can Dodge Too

Your horse, Torrent, has a double-jump and can dodge. Many overworld bosses and field encounters are significantly easier on horseback. Use the double-jump to dodge AOE attacks and maintain mobility in large arenas.

6. Learn to Dodge, Not Block

Unless you're running a dedicated shield build, dodging is your primary defense. Learn the timing — dodge into attacks, not away from them. "Panic rolling" away burns stamina and still gets you hit.

7. Read Every Item Description

Elden Ring tells its story through items. Reading weapon descriptions, ash of war abilities, and consumable notes will give you clues about quests, lore, and hidden mechanics that the game never explains outright.

8. The First Boss Isn't the Hardest Path Forward

Margit the Fell Omen guards Stormveil Castle, but he's not your only option early on. Explore Limgrave, Stormhill, and the Weeping Peninsula first. You'll gain levels, find gear, and meet NPCs whose questlines start here.

9. Use Summon Ashes — There's No Shame In It

Spirit Ashes let you summon AI allies into boss fights. This is a core game mechanic, not a crutch. The Lone Wolf Ashes you get very early are excellent for drawing aggression and giving you breathing room.

10. Take Breaks After Deaths

Frustration makes you sloppy. If you've died to the same boss three times in a row, stop. Explore somewhere else, level up, find new gear, and come back fresh. Elden Ring is designed for this approach.

Quick Reference: Early Game Priority List

  1. Explore Limgrave and find Sites of Grace
  2. Unlock Roundtable Hold
  3. Upgrade your weapon to +3 or higher
  4. Level Vigor to 25
  5. Defeat Margit with summons if needed
  6. Enter Stormveil Castle

Elden Ring's difficulty is a feature, not a flaw. Every obstacle has a solution — sometimes it just takes patience, preparation, and the willingness to try a different approach. Good luck, Tarnished.
